World Fields

Besides photography, another of my hobbies is soccer, and I read all the books on soccer I can find. Currently I came across the name Hans Van der Meer, while reading Brilliant Orange. If you aren’t familiar with him, he is a Dutch photographer who set off on a project to photograph the amateur fields of the Netherlands. Instead of taking the traditional close up shots of players fighting for the ball, he zoomed out and photographed the concept of “space” on the field. Wide angle shots to give a better sense of how the action was happening.

After looking at his website (http://hansvandermeer.nl/) I was amazed and I decided that I wanted to do a similar project. Since I travel a lot I figure I will slowly be able to add fields and photographs to my collection. It at least gives me some sort of focus for my photography, and another challenge. So, having the weekend off in my own league, I tagged along to a division 2 game of the Seoul Sunday Foreign League at the University of Seoul and photographed my first match in the style of Van der Meer.
